On the Surface

An exhibition invitation for young designers and artisans

ON THE SURFACE is a juried exhibition for young designers and craft based artisans. The exhibition will show new, insightful design products that combine skilled handwork, quality materials and a variety of techniques. As the exhibition name suggests, special attention can be given to the surface and can be interpreted in any way, with any technique – use of colour, engraving, or any kind of decoration including the use of contemporary technology. Finnish heritage can be a source of inspiration and the surface is open for all!

The On the Surface exhibition jury values ecological product design, skilled handwork, and surprising combinations of materials and techniques.

The exhibition is open to all Finnish designers, or designers living in Finland, working alone or in groups, who are under the age of 30. The work submitted to the exhibition must be recent, having been made in 2014 or thereafter. Each applicant can submit up to three pieces or series. The work for the exhibition will be chosen from photographs or videos along with a written statement. Submissions will be accepted from August 24th – November 15, 2015 in digital form. The chosen exhibition artists and designers will be published on December 10th, 2015.

This touring exhibition will be shown at the Craft Museum of Finland’s entrance hall, March 12th – June 5th, 2016, and later on in 2016, at the Craft Association’s Craft Corner, in Helsinki. During 2016 – 2017 the exhibition will tour 4-5 different exhibitions spaces around Finland. The entire exhibition surface area is about 50m2.

The On the Surface exhibition is a collaboration between the Helsinki Tyyne-Kerttu Virkki Foundation and the National specialty museum The Craft Museum of Finland in Jyväskylä. The exhibition coincides with the With Our Own Hands exhibition at the Craft Museum of Finland (January 23rd – August 28th, 2016).

Background information about the exhibition can be found on the internet site: www3.jkl.fi/blogit/craft/?p=575 (in Finnish).

The respected craft specialist Tyyne-Kerttu Virkki (1907–2000) from Helsinki, provided opportunities for young designers, fashion designers, and crafts artisans through her magazine Omin Käsin and her home economics business Kotiteollisuusliike Vokki Oy. The On the Surface exhibition is an example of how the Virkki inheritance, treasured by the Tyyne-Kerttu Virkki Foundation, continues to support young designers and craft artisans. The Foundation also maintains the Virkki Home Museum, open to the public in Helsinki, and annually organizes craft related lectures and seminars
