Book a visit to the Conservation Center
What is preventive conservation? How do you take good care of jewelry, rugs, national costumes, or other textiles so that they are preserved for posterity? Do you need tips on how to look after your own textiles?
The Conservation Center operating in connection with the Craft Museum of Finland offers advice, guidance, and training in textile conservation. The Conservation Centre's website already offers a wide range of advice and tips on textile maintenance in Finnish, but those interested in conservation can also book a visit to the Conservation Centre in Jyväskylä for their group.
During the visit, Head of Conservation Anni Tuominen will not only presents the Conservation Centre's activities, but also explain the principles of conservation. What can be conserved? Why is something conserved, and how or why is it decided not to conserve it? What is the difference between conservation and restoration? The experts at the Conservation Centre offer answers to these questions in suitably tasty bites.

In addition, during the visit, you will see what kind of conservation work the conservators do for the museum through practical examples. Susan Hannusas, the museum's conservator, will also talk about her practical work. From the inside, the conservation center looks like a laboratory working wonders, so what happens at the conservation bench? What can microscopic examination reveal? How do the colours and materials of textiles influence the choice of conservation measures? How can huge rugs and carpets be gently washed and dried?
The visit will allow you to get up close and personal with objects that may not normally be on display in museum exhibitions. It's not often that you get to admire the collection of the Craft Museum of Finland’s in person, so it's worth taking the opportunity.
