Craft tasting

Craft tasting is well suited for larger groups, such as work crews who need a program for a recreation day. Craft tasting includes samples of crafts through exhibitions, videos and self-making. No previous craft experience is required in the workshop, as the most important thing is to have fun and work together. You can find new skills in yourself or your co-workers. The craft tasting includes a brief guided tour to the museum’s exhibitions, after which we’ll gather in the lecture hall to try doing with our hands. Gather your crew in a workshop and come work with your hands, and at the same time refresh your thoughts. Let’s try new and inspiring handicrafts, in which even the clumsiest one succeeds.

Embroidery bag
In the bag, you move objects from one place to another or keep unfinished craft projects. In the workshop, the bag is embroidered with a colourful canvas letter, which you can continue by embroidering according to your enthusiasm. It was previously believed that embroidering objects protected the object and its owner from the evil eye. There are two sizes of bags, small and large.

Dream catcher
The original purpose of a dream catcher is to filter out nightmares and thoughts, letting through good dreams and thoughts. Nightmares are grabbed by the catcher’s net and flow down to the ground through the feathers. What kind of dreams would you like to see? If only they would be grabbed by a self-made dream catcher and bring you a refreshing night’s sleep as well.

Wire sculpture
In Finland we say, “twisting iron wire”, when we mean that the matter needs to be explained simply. Thin iron wire is flexible and can be used to draw a variety of images. The workshop uses ready-made drawings to twist the sculpture, but you can also draw the picture yourself. The bent iron wire drawing is planted on a wooden stand to decorate your desk.

Group workshop

It is fun to do crafts with your own familiar group! In the group, you too can get excited about new crafts. In the workshop, you delve into working with some material or technique with a small group. The workshop includes a brief tour of the museum’s permanent exhibition, guidance in the workshop, and materials.

A tour of the atmospheric permanent exhibition opens a window into the world and life of women of the past. Young woman’s portfolio included handicrafts and skills that were showcased before marriage by making dowries. But what was all under the woman’s skirt?

1.5 hours are set aside for hand-making. Gather your group and spend a unique birthday party or hanging out together at the museum. The group workshop is also well-suited as a start to bachelorette party, where the workshop ends with sparkling wine.

Mini textile
In the workshop, you will learn how to use the mini weave frame in many ways. In a finished warp we try the Kelim technique, where a gap is left between the colour areas. Kelim is a general textile used by nomads, using wool yarns dyed in natural colours as a warp.
Mini textiles can be used as jewellery or doll house textiles. In the workshop you will also learn how to create a warp in which no warps yarn has to be hidden in the finished woven textile. The mini frame is a great hand tool to take with you.

Small leather purse
Leather is a natural material that offers an alternative to the plastic problem of our time. Leather is a by-product of the meat industry, so it is ecological to utilize that part of the animal as well. We use modified cowhide in Finland. When working on a small purse, you will learn useful tanned leather processing techniques: cutting, sewing, edge polishing, shaping and dyeing. The tanned leather patinates beautifully in use even without dyeing. In the purse, you can keep for example, jewellery or wired or wireless headphones.

Wall himmeli mobile
Finnish himmeli mobile is usually made from rye straw and is hung on the ceiling to ensure next year’s harvest. Wall mobile made of black or white plastic straws and iron wire is easy to store and keep dust-free. In a wall mobile, one can outline the head of an animal, make it as a trophy, or make geometric shapes such as diamond halves. In the workshop, you will also learn how to assemble the octahedron of a traditional mobile central unit, i.e. an eight-sided facet.
