Accessibility in The Craft Museum of Finland

The Craft Museum of Finland in the heart of Jyväskylä is easy to reach by walking, car or public transportation. It's comfortable sized and there's a lot of fun for the whole family. In addition to the permanent exhibitions on the basement, there are many small exhibitions at the same time. We handle handicrafts very widely: exhibitions showcase various handicraft techniques and their talents as well as arts and crafts.

Every user of the museum is treated equally regardless of their cultural background, and user feedback is taken into account.

We are part of the EU Disability Card support teams and we want to serve our clients with special needs in the best possible way. We are therefore an official Disability Card Venue. Personal assistants arriving with the Disability Card holder will have access to the museum free of charge. The museum also has a wheelchair that can be borrowed. 

The need for changing diapers for babies has been taken into account, and for example, there is a quieter spot in the open workshop where you can breastfeed in peace.

The local bus transportation center is located on Vapaudenkatu, about 200 meters away from the museum. The nearest taxi stand is located on Kauppakatu, in front of the Jyväskylä Art Museum, about 50 meters away from the museum. Our museum is accessible when assisted

There is a disabled parking space on Kauppakatu at the address Kauppakatu 23, in front of the bank. At the location of the parking space, Kauppakatu is a courtyard street that starts from the intersection of Kilpisenkatu and Kauppakatu towards the university. Towards the Craft Museum of Finland, Kauppakatu continues as a pedestrian street.

Wheelchair access is available at street level. Access to other floors is available via a stairlift that accommodates wheelchairs, and staff are available to assist with its use if necessary.  The stairlift is a platform lift with a floor size of 97 x 77 cm. This should be taken into account when using, for example, an electric wheelchair. From the first floor, a larger passenger elevator provides access to the basement and the second floor. An accessible restroom is located on the street level, and all museum restrooms are gender-neutral.

At the street level of the museum, there is an introduction to the museum and a guide to the basic exhibition "Craft - A Touch of Life" in sign language.

There are no handrails in the exhibition rooms, so visually impaired visitors are not recommended to explore the exhibitions without an assistant. Guide dogs are welcome in all areas of the museum, and a water bowl for dogs can be found in the accessible restroom.

Attention was paid to accessibility in the exhibitions

Lights in the permanent exhibitions on the basement has been reduced to ensure the preservation of objects. In the exhibition and Sense Space you can find soundtracks, objects and materials related to handicrafts that are accessible to all senses. You can also explore objects in the main exhibition with magnifying glass. Also some of the changing exhibitions include  functional sections. The lighting of the basic exhibitions located on the ground floor has been reduced to ensure the preservation of objects. The Sense Room, part of the permanent exhibition "Craft - A Touch of Life," contains craft-related recordings, objects, and materials that visitors can experience with all their senses. You can also examine the exhibition's objects with a magnifying glass. In the permanent exhibition, visitors are allowed to touch all the objects outside the display cases.

In addition to the Sense Room, visitors can touch different materials in the exhibition "A Journey in Time," which is part of the museum's permanent exhibition.

There are various audio paths associated with the permanent exhibition that visitors can use on their own to experience the exhibition's narrative with different focuses. One of them is in English and is also published online.

Some temporary exhibitions also include sound guides and interactive sections.
