The Embassy of Ukraine has approached Finnish cities with a request to show their support for Ukraine by turning off Christmas lights or other illuminated sites for one minute at 19.00. The global campaign is a reminder of the impact of Russia's war of aggression on the lives of Ukrainians. Due to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, millions of people in Ukraine are currently without electricity.

In Jyväskylä, the coloured lights will be switched off from the Kuokkala and Ylistö bridges on 21 December 2022 at 19.00. The lights will be out for a few minutes.

Jyväskylä has supported Ukraine, both symbolically and financially. Earlier this year, the city board made a decision to donate 100 000 to Ukraine to help cope with the humanitarian crisis.

Among the Finnish cities involved in tonight's campaign are at least Oulu and Turku.
