The city of Jyväskylä wants to hear from residents about their walking experiences and habits in Jyväskylä. What makes you walk and what prevents you from walking? Where do you feel comfortable as a pedestrian and in which places is it difficult to walk? As a resident, you have the best knowledge of how your neighborhood works in terms of walking and how the conditions should be improved. The survey is carried out to support the planning of Jyväskylä's new walking and cycling promotion program. All residents of Jyväskylä can answer the survey, either by themselves or with assistance.

Record birdsong with a popular app and help science – one hundred point count stations around the city in Jyväskylä

Kvik kvik, tsirp tsirp and ti-ti-tyy – now you no longer have to guess which bird species it is, as the artificial intelligence of the mobile application recognizes bird species! By making a recording, you can also help science. During the spring, a hundred point counting sites for migratory birds have been set up in the City of Jyväskylä area, where anyone can record birdsong and make their recordings available to researchers. This is the Migratory Bird Spring application developed by the University of Jyväskylä, and this year it will be used to create a point count network together with the City of Helsinki and Metsähallitus National Parks.

Swimming Ban Lifted: Mattlanniemi Beach Welcomes Back Swimmers

The result of the Mattilanniemi beach swimming water samples taken on Tuesday, 20 June 2023, showed that the microbiological quality of the water now meets the requirements. The swimming ban issued to Mattilanniemi beach on Monday, 19 June 2023, is lifted. Now the beach is in normal use again.

The water quality of the swimming beach is monitored with samples. Feeding the birds in the beach area is prohibited.

The Kaleva Games in Jyväskylä in the 100th anniversary of Harju in 2026

The federal council of the Finnish Athletics Federation (SUL) has granted the 2026 Athletics Championship, the Kaleva Games (Kalevan Kisat), to Jyväskylä. The City of Jyväskylä and the Jyväskylä Field Athletes (JKU) jointly applied for competitions for 2026, which is the 100th anniversary of Harju Stadium. Harju Stadium will be renovated and expanded by the time of the Kaleva Games.

Jyväskylä competed for the 2026 Kaleva Games with Oulu and Pori. SUL's federal council decided on awarding competitions to Jyväskylä.

On The Edge – Master Bladesmiths 7.1.–12.3.2023

The Finnish knife is the source of legends, and each knife has the looks of its maker and customer. On The Edge exhibition presents knives made by four master bladesmiths.

The notion of a bladesmith is usually associated with an forge and the clangour of hammer, but the work is also strongly involves knowledge of materials and planning. Even a visually pleasing blade or knife must be usable. The simpler the knife, the more accurate the proportions and the more the materials must harmonize with each other.

Secto Rally Finland brought over EUR 17 million to the Jyväskylä region

The Finnish round of the World Rally Championship, or Secto Rally Finland, returned this year to its full four-day glory after the difficult coronavirus period. A total of 230,000 spectators were recorded in Jyväskylä and Central Finland, the visitor record was broken in Harju, and the Finnish World Cup Rally left a jackpot of income behind for the Jyväskylä region and Central Finland.

In the general competition, there was no opportunity to celebrate a victory for Finland, but a great sports weekend was crowned by the second-place

Guide for the exhibition builder

The aim of the exhibitions of the Craft Museum of Finland is to create experiences and to convey and increase knowledge of phenomena from different perspectives of craftsmanship. The museum's exhibitions present crafts as a profession, art and hobby.

In addition to its own collections, the museum presents the collections of other museums, institutions and individuals. The museum exhibits traditional crafts and contemporary products, old and new. In addition to national exhibitions, the museum regularly hosts international exhibitions.

Photo archive

Almost 40,000 images are cataloged in the electronic collection management system of the Craft Museum of Finland's photo archive. The photo collection consists of original photos and prints made with different techniques. The oldest image material are glass negatives from the beginning of the 20th century, and the newest image material are image files in digital form, which have become common since the beginning in the 21st century.

Document archives

The purpose of the archives maintained by the Craft Museum of Finland is to record the Finnish craft culture, craft tradition and related knowledge and skills. The collections are managed and maintained for research use and are available to all customers. The scope of the archive collections of the Craft Museum of Finland is about 150 shelf meters. The collections of the document archive are divided into two separate entities, both the museum's own and external collections.

Crafts businesses and organizations collection

The crafts businesses and organizations collection is a history of both Finland’s major artisan companies and organizations as well as more minor actors. The records from machine-assisted handicrafts industry focus on product design, while those from larger companies emphasize small-scale series production. Records of the history and activities of associations join those documenting the experiences of small businesses in the creative field as well as those of the evolution of education in crafts.

National costume collection

The National Costume Center of Finland is dedicated to preserves national costumes and related materials from Finnish-speaking territories. The collection also covers costumes previously considered national costumes that continue to be worn as such today, as well as local and provincial costumes.

Professional crafts collections

The professional crafts collections are a presentation of broad themes of professional arts and crafts, with foundations in the Craft Museum of Finland’s field work and active contemporary documentation activities since 1984. The collection is mainly focused on private practitioners and entrepreneurship. In-depth materials entered into the collection include interviews, objects, photographs, and videos.
