BLOUN – Free-blown glass 3.9.–13.11.2022

BLOUN, a glassblowing company based in Sastamala, Finland, manufactures colourful and unique lamps and other interior design products from recycled glass. The objects are shaped by free-blowing, without moulds or machines, just as glassblowers have done for the past two centuries. Bloun wants to preserve this ancient craft by combining it with modern design.

In Good Hands 12.9.–5.12.2020

What does the past of handicrafts look like in the eyes of modern designers, and what kind of inspiration can be drawn from the collection at the museum? The designers invited to the In Good Hands exhibition have had the chance to explore the extensive archives, founded in 1879, of the Friends of Finnish Handicraft at the Design Museum. After this they have created their works in dialogue with the archive materials.

Collections

The collections of the museum now consist of 53 000 objects. The basic collection is made up of the old surviving collections that have been moved to Jyväskylä. It is our aim to add to the collection with careful selection and planning. From the present day we keep essential phenomena of the handicraft culture for the collection. Quality is more important than quantity in the collections at the moment.
